Worked example

From race weight to a quarter-mile estimate

At 3,500 lb total race weight and 400 hp, the estimate is 12.00 s ET at 113.6 mph.

What belongs in race weight?

Use the weight of the car as it runs, including the driver, fuel, and any cargo or equipment. If you start with curb weight, add the driver and extra load and adjust for differences between the listed and actual fuel load.

What is the difference between ET and trap speed?

Elapsed time is how long the quarter-mile pass takes. Trap speed is the speed measured near the finish. A poor launch can slow ET, while gearing, aerodynamics, and track conditions can affect the pass and the speed at the finish.
